Separate Cities Results Problem

Post by Tempest Nathan » Tue Aug 07, 2012 7:58 pm

Due to another change at craigslist, the provider we were using for Separate Cities mode is no longer able to get new posts. Therefore, we will be switching the Separate Cities mode to use google, like the All Cities Together mode. We hope to have this done by tomorrow.

All Cities Together and Direct Results modes are still working normally. To switch modes, see that tabs on the results page under the dark search bar.

I am not sure if you know what you are doing or think if you toss out excuses that will placate people. But your answers don't float. I have tried a couple of your rivals and they are as good at the searches and infinitely faster. And they don't seem to gave problems with "indexing cities" or whatever you excuse of the day is. I have recommneded Searchtempest in the past and I loved it and Autotempest as well- but now it seems the ONLY thing it is good for is lame and inneffective excuses.

Do you realize you're quoting a post from 8 months ago that has no bearing on the current situation? This post describes what is happening right now:

http://forums.searchtempest.com/viewtop ... f=4&t=1378

As far as I know, every other craigslist search site uses a Google Custom Search engine similar to ours, and all are having exactly the same problem right now. I've personally been in regular contact with the owner of adhuntr, who's a good guy, discussing the problem. Perhaps some of the sites just aren't being as open in communicating with their users. In fact, go straight to google, do a search for something on craigslist and sort by date. You'll see that you get some results for the past day, then a giant gap, then results resume around Feb. 28. Here are some posts on Google's forums describing the problem:

As far as other sites being faster, other sites by default return everything in one big list. We return results city by city because it's generally more useful. Of course, it takes longer because it means a separate search for each city. However, we give you complete control if you prefer it the other way. If you want fast, it's as simple as changing the sort dropdown.

Finally, as long as Google is not indexing, we have Direct Results mode and RSS Feeds for you to use. As far as I know, we're the only site that does, at least so far. I'm also working on an alternative using Bing, which I hope to have ready by tomorrow.

So... tell me again why my lame, ineffective excuses don't float? :P I'm sorry, but when I'm busting my butt trying to work around a problem to give people the best service possible, I find this kind of thing a bit irritating.
