radius less than 25?

Post by devildoll » Tue Oct 26, 2010 1:44 pm

Searched the forums, couldn't find this question posed.

Is there a way to restrict my search to less than 25 miles? I only want to search for things within 5 miles of my home. That's what I liked about CraigLook, but they got iced by CL.

Is there more than one craigslist city within 25 miles of you? I hadn't realized any were that close together. Which ones are they?

In case this is just a misunderstanding, please note that the distance setting (as with Craiglook) only relates to the distance between you and the city. It doesn't deal with individual ads within a craigslist city. (There are a few reasons for this, but one main one is that I have to send you craigslist's results as-is, untouched, to avoid the problems that Craiglook and others have faced.)

I'm in between Philadelphia and Wilmington Delaware.

What I liked with CraigLook was that I could use my zip (19063) as the center point of my search. Thereby being able to look for things that were less than a mile (or 3 miles, or 5) away.

The thing is, there isn't actually a craigslist for Wilmington, DE. There is one craigslist serving all of Delaware, so to calculate its distance, it is considered to be in the middle of the state (just over 50 miles from your zip). It would technically prohibitive to calculate the distance from each zip to the nearest part of a craigslist location, and it wouldn't necessarily make sense, because any given ad could be located anywhere within the city. (So for example, something listed on the Delaware craigslist could be down at the southern tip of DE. By using the distance from the middle of your zip to the middle of the craigslist location, we give the best estimate for all cases.)

Does that clear things up? If you increase your search radius to 75 miles, you should get results from Philadelphia and Delaware, plus a few others. Or if you're only interested in those two, you can click the option on the left of the search screen to choose individual states and/or cities to search, and pick exactly what you want.

Hope that helps. If not, just let me know!

Nah, I'm not explaining well.

I want to restrict my searches.

I live in a town about 12 miles out of Philadelphia (Media, PA).

If I want to search for a toaster under $20, I don't want search results more than 3 miles away from me.
That's what I was able to do with Craiglook. I was able to search in a radius of (1, 2, 5, 8, whatever) miles from my zip code (19063).

Does that make sense?

The problem is, it's not possible to tell where an individual listing comes from; only the city itself. (So you either get all the ads from a given city (like Philadelphia) or none of them.)

If Craiglook was able to do that, they must have looked at the actual 'location' field entered by the user for each ad. That's a problem right off the bat, because users can enter anything they want there, so it would be problematic matching it to actual locations. More importantly though, craiglook had access to that information because they actually scraped (copied) craigslist's content. That's what got them banned.

Searchtempest doesn't scrape any craigslist content; we basically just save you time by automating the entry of your search queries in multiple cities. However, it means a) we can't actually 'see' the contents of the ads, so there's no way to determine their locations (aside from which city they belong to) and b) even if we could, there's no way to filter out the results in a city that we don't want, aside from using the existing keywords system. Basically the results from each craigslist city go straight from them to you. ST can't add any filtering or anything like that. I try to make it as useful as possible within those restrictions, but the first priority has to be respecting craigslist's rights to avoid having the site shut down.

Hope that clears things up. Honestly, the majority of people using the site tend to search 5-10 cities or so. If you're only looking at one or two it might not be as valuable, although we still do provide easier (in my opinion) access to craigslist's options. (For example, allowing you to specify price and subcategory and such without going through multiple pages.) You also might find the ability to show eBay results at the same time useful. Or not. ;)
