New Results format problem

Post by fcoreyesv » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:05 pm

Hi,

I commend you for you great job creating this tool.

I am doing a search on the new format and when it reaches aboout 1000 miles in distance, the java applet does not work anymore and keeps the thinking icon

To test do the following search:

Road bicycle trek , distance 2500 miles

if you go to the end of the list and extend the list two times, at the end it gets stuck on the search icon.

Let me know if this makes sense.

I am a system analyst and I am bilingual if you are interested in translating your site in Spanish and provide support in Spanish.

Best regards

Jose

Hi Jose,

How much RAM memory does your computer have? On very low memory machines (512MB or less), it is possible for your browser to use up all available memory from displaying a large number of results. An easy way to test this is to restart your computer, close all unnecessary programs, then run your search. If it works fine (or you get farther than you did before), it's likely a memory issue. In that case, I would recommend going to the Search tab of the Options menu (link at the top-right of the main page), and choosing manual selection of states and cities. That way you can break your search into several chunks to run separately. I'm working on a better solution for this, as well as a warning on large searches that they may cause problems on machines with low memory.

If that's not your issue, then the most likely thing is a problem with the java applet itself. Please run your search, then right-click on the Java coffee cup icon in your taskbar and selec Open Console. Then continue showing pages until it locks up. Hopefully an error message will come up in the java console. Please paste it here. Also right-click on the java icon again paste the information under 'About Java'.

Thanks for your help. Hopefully we can get this figured out soon!

At home I have 2 GB. I do not think that is the problem.

I will open the console to see if there is any error messages.

This is the console log. At the end there is a null result and a code 304.

The stuff at the end there has to do with displaying images in a specific ad opened from craigslist. (A null result is expected with a 304 response code. 304 means unchanged, so the image is retrieved from the cache instead of being downloaded again.)

Can you send me the URL of the results page you're getting so I can try your exact search? Also, does it always fail at exactly the same point, or does it vary? As I mentioned in your log, it shows that you're opening individual ads; does showing 2 additional pages of results fail regardless of whether original ads are shown? Also, please let me know what browser and OS you're using.

Thanks!

Hmm.. I just double-checked in Chrome on XP with Java 1.6_17, and it worked fine. Opened your search and scrolled through about 10 pages of results, opened a few ads, etc. First, please try upgrading to the newest Java. (Your 1.6_14 isn't really old, but since Java for Chrome is still technically in the testing phase, any minor revision might make a difference.) Latest is here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp.

If that doesn't do it, see if you can come up with an exact sequence of events that repeatedly causes the crash. Do you only click the Show More link twice, or do you open/close/view some ads along the way? The more specific the better.
